When American submarine Swordfish is torpedoed the survivors are picked up by a passing German U-boat but an outbreak of meningitis threatens all aboard. However, the photos in this book are really interesting, with captions written by the author explaining each one. Macy, Til Schweiger, Thomas Kretschmann, Clark Gregg. so much so that when I joined the US Navy after college, I went for aviation, not submarines. The movie made quite an impression on me when I was in college. The novel Das Boot was a fictionalized account based on several U-boats, and I haven't read the novel, but I own the DVD. The author was a photographer who photographed several U-boat patrols, and the book is full of his photos from the war. I own a pictorial book called U-Boat War by Lothar-Günther Buchheim printed in 1979. It lacked something that the original subtitled version I first saw had. I was really disappointed when I went to go see it again on its second theatrical release and it wasn't in German with subtitles. Saw it on the big screen when it was first released - subtitled too (was there a later dubbed English version?) - one of the best U-Boat movies made - realism, tension & claustrophobia
